INCORPORATING
AFRICAN CANADIAN HISTORY INTO THE ONTARIO CURRICULUM: A WORKSHOP SERIES FOR
TEACHERS
Beginning in summer 2013, Black history curriculum
specialist, educator, author, and historian Natasha Henry is pleased to
announce the launch of a unique workshop series on strategies for teaching
Black history in elementary and secondary grades
SUMMER SESSION
TOPIC: African Canadian Settlers and Communities
DATE: Thursday, July 11, 2013
African Canadians
have lived in Canada since the 1600s and have significantly impacted many
spheres of Canadian society. Experienced workshop facilitator Natasha Henry
will demonstrate how African Canadian history doesn't have to be a stand-alone
unit, and how it can be incorporated throughout the curriculum.
These informative and interactive workshops will provide
teachers with constructive and practical classroom strategies to help them
effectively integrate more African Canadian experiences into the curriculum
through the use of primary sources, online tools, and a range of other
supplementary materials.
Educators will also gain valuable content knowledge and
learn inquiry-based approaches to teaching African Canadian history across the
curriculum.
WHO ARE THESE WORKSHOPS FOR?
These engaging workshops are designed for J/I teachers
(grades 3 – 10) who may not be familiar with the subject matter and aims for
participants to leave the workshop with the knowledge, skills, and tools to
bring intriguing stories of African Canadians to life.

- Areas of Black settlement in Upper Canada

- Teaching African Canadian history across the curriculum
- Teaching African Canadian history using technology
