The UNESCO Slave Route project has recognized that the historic site associated with people of African decent constitute a "Itinerary of Memory." The Itineraries of African Canadian memory highlighted the importance of the African Canadian past within the framework of the UNESCO Slave Route Project and was launched during the UN designated International Year for People of African Decent.
The right Honorable Michaelle Jean, former governor general of Canada and UNESCO Special Envoy for Haiti, presided at the dedication on August 23 , 2011. The day proclaimed by UNESCO as an international Day for the remembrance of the Slave Trade and it's Abolition. August 23 also commemorated the uprising that led to the establishment of Haiti as a independent state.
