The City of Barrie Celebrates Black History Month

By C. Ferguson

The City of Barrie celebrated Black History Month with a series of events at The Mady Centre for the Performing Arts. Motivational speaker and lawyer, Rose Adams challenged the young crowd to attain greater focus and productivity as a road map for success while keynote speaker Joe Sealy presented his Juno Award winning “Africville Suite” and shared some personal experiences from his journeys to this small city north of Halifax, which was initially home to the American slaves who escaped during the War of 1812 and as Linda Ward noted, "to these black settlers, it was a place where they could live in privacy, free from racism and discrimination."
